Saint Anthony’s Church is proud to present the Nativity of Christ Greek Orthodox Church’s dancers who will be performing a set of traditional dances from the northern regions of Epirus and Thessaly, and Naxos, one of the Cyclades Islands in the Aegean Sea. The music from Epirus and Thessaly is often melodized by a clarinet and the regions’ dances include heavy and emphasized steps. The Naxos style of dance is light and springy in the knees and the island’s songs commonly feature the gaida (a bagpipe made of goatskin).
The dancers will also perform an adaptation of one of their favorite dances, the syrtaki, from the 1964 film, Zorba the Greek, which has become a popular taverna dance throughout Greece. To end each performance, the dancers will invite the audience to join them in dancing Kalamatianos, the national dance of Greece.
